Maastricht

The Dutch city of Maastricht lies about 40 km across the border from Aachen and can be reached by train or bus No. 350. In modern times it is known for the Maastricht Treaty that established the European Union but it also is a very pretty old city on the banks of the Maas river. It features many cobblestone streets, grand squares, ancient churches, town houses from the 17th century – and sidewalk cafes to rest.

Liège

The city of Liège in Belgium’s French-speaking Wallonia region also lies on the Maas river , about 50 km away from Aachen/ a 30 minute ride in the famous Thalys train away from Aachen. Just like Maastricht, it has an old town with old squares, Romanesque churches and 17th-century mansions. Yet it also has Europe’s coolest train station (Liège-Guillemins), designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Being a city still recovering from former industrial fame, Liège will probably not be considered a pretty city but it is an intriguing place to discover. If you are there on a Sunday, La Batte market right by the river is highly recommended.
